A RESEARCH ON CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE: COMPARISION OF OLD AND NEW APPLICATIONS

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to put forth the opinions of elementary educa-tion department students, who have taken classroom management course, on their elementary school teachers’ practices in the past and their future practices about classroom discipline and of the efficiency of classroom management course. The working group of the study was consisted of 141 voluntary university students from Ankara and Hacettepe Universities. The opinions of the participants were analyzed by content analysis method. At the end of study, the participants stated that their teachers’ had showed au-thoritarian behaviors and they would, in contrast, show more democratic attitudes while setting the classroom rules. Both their teachers’ and their strategies on preventing undisciplined student behavior were very similar. They were opposed to the sanctions and violent behaviors of their past teachers, and instead they said they would try to communicate with their students in a better way.
