ABSTRACT

Resiliency is a complex construct including many concepts like hardiness and challenge. Therefore, it is very important to select and use the right scale in resilience studies. Resiliency studies of Turkey have been increasing for last several years. Subjects of Turkey’s resilience studies are mostly children and youth. Adaptation scales were mainly used in these studies to assess resilience. There is not any resiliency scale appropriate to our country’s conditions except Gürgan’s (2006a, 2006b) Resilience Scale which was developed for university students. The aim of this study is to develop Mother Resilience Scale to assess mothers’ perception of resilience. In addition to 50 items from the Gürgan’s Resilience Scale, 49 new items considered to assess mothers’ resilience perceptions were written. Therefore, a draft form was administrated to the mothers of 307 children aged 6-14 in mainstreaming classes. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to data collected form mothers, and analysis revealed an eight-factor-scale with 34 items: Optimism-4 items, Challenging-10 items, Self-Efficacy-4 items, Social Support-4 items, Motivation to an Aim/Achievement-3 items, Seeking Novelty-3 items, Predicting Risks-3 items, and Social Competence-3 items. Goodness of fit indexes are chi-square/df=1024.18/464=2.21; RMSEA: 0.060; RMR: 0.058; Standardize RMR: 0.053; NNFI: 0.96; CFI: 0.97; GFI: 0.84; AGFI: 0.81. Item analysis and correlations between subscales were also calculated. Parental Self-efficacy Scale and Rosenbaum’s Learned Resourcefulness Scale were used to test convergent validity, and Beck Depression Inventory was conducted to test divergent validity of the scale. Cronbach Alpha coefficients are between 0.58-0.94.
