TURKISH BILINGUAL EQUIVALENCE, RELIABILITY, AND VALIDITY STUDIES OF "COLLEGE ADJUSTMENT SCALES"

Abstract

The aim of present study is to determine bilingual equivalence, reliability, and validity of College Adjustment Scales (CAS) and its appropriateness for Turkish university students. The CAS intents primarily for use of in college counseling and guidance services. William J. Anton and James R. Reed have developed the original form. It assesses nine areas of adjustment difficulties: Anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, self-esteem problems, interpersonal problems, family problems, academic problems, and career problems. Students rate the 108 CAS items on 4-point scale ranging false or not at all true to very true. Twenty-four students from the English Teaching Department supposed fluent in both languages were the participants of bilingual equivalence study. Three hundred-fifty students (153 male, 197 female) from different department of Atatürk Faculty of Education were included the study of the other analyses. To assess the validity, some subscales of Short Symptoms Inventory, and Hacettepe Personality Scale, and Beck Anxiety Scale were used. All studies illustrate that the scale can use confidently in Turkish culture because of its satisfactory bilingual equivalence, reliability, and validity coefficients.
