Abstract

Even tough effectiveness of educational investments is investigated from different perspective; student achievement is a major end product to assess. National and international assessment studies follow up student achievement periodically. The follow up assessment of Turkish student achievement level seems impossible in the international studies at the moment since Turkey participated only once to the PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS projects. However, Student Selection Examination results make such an assessment possible across years, school types and geographical regions. Moreover, regional and school types differences were also analyzed in the PISA 2003. The findings of both studies indicate that student achievement is very low, and there is no improvement across the years. The findings also point out that between school differences are larger compared to regional differences.
