Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a Mathematics Teaching Anxiety Scale (MATAS). In order to develop the MATAS, the scale with 40 items was prepared in the light of related literature. The scale was given to some experts in this area for the evaluation purposes. The researcher made necessary changes on the scale based on the concerns of the experts. The scale with 40 items was administered to 121 pre-service elementary and middle level mathematics teachers for the pilot study. After the pilot study, 5 items were extracted from scale based on experts’ suggestions. After this revision, the scale with 35 items was given to 242 pre-service elementary, middle & secondary mathematics teachers educated at the University of Cumhuriyet and Black Sea Technique University. In the analysis of the data Statistical package program (SPSS) was used. The component analysis for the validity and the Croanbach Alpha for the reliability procedures were performed. Based on the factor and reliability analysis, the researcher developed the Mathematics Teaching Anxiety Scale (MATAS) consisting of 23 items with four sub-groups: The internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach Alpha) of MATAS was .91.
