ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the parent training program on a) mothers’ use of Natural Language Intervention Techniques including Modeling, Expanding, and Mand-modeling with their children with limited language skills; b) mothers’ generalization of the techniques to their daily home routines, and c) mothers’ maintenance of the techniques during two weeks and four weeks after the end of parents training. Study participants were two students attending the first grade in an education practice and vocational school and mothers of the students. The parent training program was developed in order to teach mothers how to use the Natural Language Intervention Techniques. The parent training program included informing mothers about natural language interventions, exemplifying the techniques, discussing the importance of the techniques, and practicing phases. Multiple probe design across behaviors design was used to determine the effectiveness of the parent training. In order to collect the study data, mother-child interactions during the play sessions were recorded with a video camera both before and after the parent training program. To determine the frequency of the mothers’ use of Natural Language Intervention Techniques, the data was recorded by using a data gathering form. The results indicated that the parent training program was effective on increasing mothers’ use of Modeling, Expanding and Mand-modeling techniques, as well as mothers’ generalization of the techniques to their daily routines, and mothers’ maintenance of the techniques during two weeks and four weeks after the parents training.
